Saint Dunstan’s University
About Saint Dunstan’s University
Saint Dunstan's University (SDU) was a Roman Catholic university located in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada, founded in 1855 by Bishop Bernard MacDonald as a seminary to train clergy and educate lay leaders for the Diocese of Charlottetown. Its predecessor, St. Andrew's College, was established in 1831. SDU received its university charter in 1917 but did not confer its first bachelor's degrees until 1941. In 1969, following a provincial government review of post-secondary education on the island, SDU merged with Prince of Wales College to form the non-denominational University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI), which now occupies the former SDU campus.
