About Carleton University

Carleton University is a public research university located in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It was founded in 1942 as a non-denominational evening college, sponsored in part by charity donations from the Ottawa community, to serve veterans returning from the Second World War. It was named after the former Carleton County, itself named after Guy Carleton, 1st Baron Dorchester. The Carleton University Act, passed in 1952 and revised in 1957, gave the institution full university status and its current name. The university moved to its current riverside campus along the Rideau Canal in the late 1950s, and today serves over 30,000 students across undergraduate and graduate programs. Carleton is particularly well known for journalism, public affairs, aerospace engineering, and architecture, given its location in Canada's capital, with strong ties to federal government institutions and agencies.
