Eligibility Criteria

  • Have or be expected to obtain a first-class or strong upper-second-class undergraduate degree (or equivalent).
  • Your degree should be in a relevant field such as:

    • Earth/Environmental Sciences

  • A master's degree is not required.
  • Meet Oxford's higher-level English language requirement if applicable:
    • IELTS Academic: 7.5 overall, minimum 7.0 in each component
    • TOEFL iBT: 110 overall with specified component minimums.

Selection Process

Application submission

Submit your complete DPhil application and supporting documents by the relevant deadline.

Academic assessment

Oxford assesses your academic record, research potential, and suitability for the programme.

Research proposal assessment

  • Your 1,000–1,500-word research proposal is assessed for:
  • Originality
  • Feasibility
  • Understanding of the proposed research area
  • Evidence of research preparation
  • Ability to present a clear, reasoned argument in English.

Shortlisting

Academic staff associated with the programme shortlist candidates for interview based on their academic record, research potential, and proposed research.

Interview

  • Shortlisted applicants normally have an interview.
  • It typically lasts about 25 minutes and is conducted by at least two academic staff.

Final admission decision

Successful candidates receive an offer, which may include conditions such as achieving a specified final degree grade.

Funding selection

Oxford states that the majority of applicants offered a place are expected to also receive the fully funded scholarship covering course fees and a living stipend. Funding status is not considered when assessing your academic application.
