Full Description

The University of British Columbia (UBC) is pleased to be partnering with The Mastercard Foundation to foster the next generation of African leaders. After supporting over 171 Mastercard Foundation Scholars in its first phase, The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at UBC will provide 351 academically talented young people from Africa with access to quality and relevant university education at UBC. After graduating, the Mastercard Foundation Scholars will then utilize their learning and experiences to contribute to the economic growth and social transformation of their communities in Africa.

How to Apply

Round 1: Eligible applicants will be invited to apply to the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program between September 15–30, 2026. The full application (submitted as one online form) must include: (1) completed Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program Application Form with concise personal statement answers; (2) CV/resume; (3) two reference letters on official letterhead (attached to the application, do not email separately); (4) transcripts.
Round 2: Apply to your UBC Faculty between November 1–20, 2026 — late applications will not be considered. Successful Round 1 applicants receive an email with instructions to submit their UBC Faculty application. A fee waiver may be available for applicants whose citizenship and correspondence address are in one of the world's 50 least developed countries (per the UN list), this must be requested during the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program application; it cannot be refunded if applied after submission.

Timeline

  • August 31st: Expression of Interest Opens
  • September 15th – September 30th: Invitation to Apply (R1)
  • November 1st – November 20th: Successful Applicants are invited to apply to their faculties (R2)
  • December 20th – January 1st: Successful candidates contacted for interviews (R3)
  • February – Early March: Selected Scholars receive offers for the Winter term
  • August: Scholars welcomed in Vancouver for the Winter term

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for consideration for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Masters’ Degree Program at UBC, the applicant must:

  • have completed a Bachelor’s degree;
  • not already have a Master’s degree;
  • be 35 years old or younger at the time of application (i.e. born in 1990 or after);
  • be a citizen or a refugee of an African country;
  • be applying for a Master’s degree in one of the eligible programs listed below;
  • meet the minimum academic requirements of the program they are applying to.
